Shodo Series

About This Series

The Shodo Series brings together Eastern and Western traditions, drawing on the ancient Japanese art of calligraphy to explore gesture, energy, and presence. Inspired by Christian Hook’s time in Japan, the works reflect a deep engagement with the principles of Shodō—where each mark is both an action and a trace of the artist’s state of mind.

At the heart of the series lies an exploration of movement and the space between moments, echoing the Japanese concept of ma. Through fluid, expressive brushwork, Hook captures not a fixed image, but a continuous state of becoming—where form emerges and dissolves within the same gesture.

Balancing the discipline of calligraphy with a contemporary painterly approach, The Shodo Series marks a significant evolution in Hook’s visual language. It represents a meeting point of cultures and ideas, where figuration and abstraction converge in a dynamic study of time, energy, and perception.
