Sahara is a body of work inspired by Christian Hook’s travels through Egypt, reflecting on the vastness, clarity, and quiet intensity of the desert landscape. Immersed in the shifting light of the dunes and the rhythm of the night sky, the series explores a world where time, movement, and perception are heightened to their most elemental forms.
At the centre of the works are equine subjects and imagined desert figures, rendered with a sense of energy and transformation. Drawing on the traditions of navigation by wind and stars, Hook captures not only the physical presence of his subjects, but the invisible forces that guide and surround them. Celestial references and layered compositions evoke a landscape that is both grounded and cosmic.
Combining oil, collage, and gold leaf, Sahara translates the sensory experience of the desert into a rich visual language—where heat, light, and atmosphere are felt as much as they are seen. Balancing observation with imagination, the series continues Hook’s exploration of time, motion, and the space between moments.
