A Collection of Portraits brings together a selection of early works that reflect Christian Hook’s deep engagement with character, identity, and presence. Rooted in observation, these portraits capture individuals from Gibraltar’s cultural and public life alongside historically significant figures, offering a study in both likeness and psychological depth.
Among the subjects are prominent local figures such as Sir Peter Caruana and Gustavo Bacarisas y Podestá (b. 1873), alongside iconic personalities including Winston Churchill. Each work reflects Hook’s early mastery of traditional portraiture, while already hinting at the expressive language that would come to define his later practice.
Balancing technical precision with a sensitivity to mood and presence, this series lays the foundation for Hook’s ongoing exploration of portraiture, where the aim extends beyond resemblance to capture something more enduring and intangible.
