Neon is a vivid and technically ambitious body of work in which Christian Hook explores light, energy, and the heightened visual intensity of contemporary life. Introduced as part of his retrospective The Anatomy of a Concept, the series marks a striking evolution in his practice, incorporating fluorescent and neon pigments to create paintings that shift dramatically in response to light.
Balancing the elegance of traditional figuration with the immediacy of modern visual culture, the works draw on influences ranging from electronic music to urban mark-making. Under ultraviolet light, colour becomes unstable and immersive, transforming the surface of each painting into something charged, atmospheric, and alive.
At once sensual and experimental, Neon extends Hook’s long-standing interest in motion, perception, and the moments between states. The series captures a world of vibrant tension—where beauty, rhythm, and energy converge in a distinctly contemporary visual language.
