Painting the Invisible is a major body of work in which Christian Hook explores the unseen forces that shape our reality. Inspired by the idea that most of the universe exists beyond human perception, the series seeks to give form to what cannot ordinarily be seen—translating complex scientific ideas into a new visual language.
Developed through collaborations with leading scientists, the works move fluidly between figuration and abstraction, grounding expressive mark-making in concepts of time, energy, and human connection. Hook’s approach extends portraiture beyond likeness, capturing not only the subject, but the intangible dynamics that exist around and between them.
At once intellectual and deeply human, Painting the Invisible challenges how we perceive reality—offering a vision of portraiture that is both contemporary and timeless.
